Chapter 23

Waiting for Me

A package was awaiting me when we returned to the flat. It was from Aaron, and it was a jar of kimchi, bubble-wrapped and FedExed from Seattle.

Helping you find kimchi in Ireland.

Love, Aaron

“Who’s that from, babe?” asked Nate. He went into the other room to change out of his suit. A lump began to form in my throat, which I quickly had to swallow. The sun was beginning to set outside, and there was little light coming in through the bay window at this hour.

It’s kimchi! It’s from…my mom,” I said, quickly wiping a tear away with the back of my hand. Nate emerged from the bedroom and placed a kettle of water onto the stove.

“Oh yeah, she mentioned you missed kimchi. I was going to bring you a jar, but I didn’t want it bursting all over my carry-on,” Nate said as he turned the stove on. He turned around and went into the bathroom, slamming the door behind him.

“We’ll get some when we return to NYC together!” he yelled, but his words were muffled by the sound of the shower. It was getting chillier. The sound of the boiling kettle soon went off loudly and startled me. By the time I made it to the stove, water was splashing all over the place.

We were returning to New York City this week—together. His brother was getting married, although it was a wedding I was not looking forward to attending. For one, his entire family would be there. Judgmental mom Sue. Big mouth Uncle Joe. Gossipy Aunt Helen. And the cousins. All of his passive aggressive cousins.

But Grandma Lucetta would be there. I did miss her. I never mustered up the strength to return her call either. I don’t know if it was shamefulness or running away from reality. She wouldn’t want me returning to Ireland, and neither would Nate. I was marrying Nate. I didn’t have a life in Ireland. I soon wouldn’t have a job in Ireland either. I was marrying Nate, and soon I would face his entire family.
